Indian jewellery has existed in almost an unchanged form through the centuries, its tradition handed down from the ancient epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Rig Veda, Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda also refer to the use of jewellery. Each object used in society was representative of the status of the wearer and was believed to have been imbused with magical properties. In tribal society, tabeej, an amulet which has prayers inscribed on it, is said to protect the wearer from evil influences, as is jewellery inscribed with figures of local deities. Traditionally, jewellery was (and still is) mandatory for Indian married women who were not expected to be seen without a necklace, earrings, head ornaments and bangles. A jewellery of a married woman as it was considered inauspicious.
Each region of India has distinctive styles of jewellery specific to it. Many factors - castes, cultural developments, external influences such as those from migratory tribes and trade contacts - influence the styles of a particular place. If we consider the nose ornament, for example, there was - surprisingly - hardly any reference to it in early Indian literature, sculptures or murals. The earliest depiction of the nose ornament is from the tenth centurt AD, in Mughal miniature and Rajasthani paintings. This has led to the inference that the nose ornament was introduced in India only after the invasion of the Arabs in the ninth- tenth century AD.
