Earring Jewelry

Ear Ornaments are almost mandatory accessories for a Hindu woman and wearing them is considered both becoming and auspicious. Earrings also have specific significance, denoting a married woman. According to the philosopher Shankara, in his treatise Saundarya Lahiri, Lord Shiva's immortality is attributed to the power of his mother's tantakar (ear ornaments). The verse of Saundarya Lahiri that mentions Shiva has been interpreted by mediaeval commentators to mean that the sun and the moon are tantakrs adorning Devi's (Shiva's consort, goddess Parvati) ears and are hence under her aegis. The commencement, duration and the end of time are directed by the sun and the moon and so are virtually controlled by the tantakar worn by Devi.

Types of Earrings

Earrings are attached to the ears by two means, the use of posts and the use of wires. From there, a variety of earrings was created to suit each individual.
The most common type of earrings is the stud earring. It is attached to the ear through the post, which makes it seem to float on the earlobe. Stud earrings are held in place by the friction back to keep it in place without fear of it falling off.
Hoop earrings are those circular earrings that are attached to the ear by wires to make a complete ring. Posts can also be used to secure it to the ear, but it is not a complete circle.
Dangle earrings, so far, is the favorite among women as it is commonly seen anywhere. They measure from a centimeter to even just barely touching the shoulders. Wires and posts are also used for ear attachments, but most frequently, wires are used shaped into a small hook.
Huggy earrings are so called because they seem to hug the earlobe. Many earring crafters take advantage of huggy earrings to show off their expertise in this field and tend to make elaborate and varied designs.

Belly Chain

A bellychain or waist chain is on of body jewelry which is worn around the waist. Summer is the perfect time to decorate your skin with body jewelry. Enamelling:

Known as meenakari, the art of enamelling has been at home in many parts of India, though the work of the genre from Delhi, Jaipur and Benaras is well known. Decorative patterns are first created by using coloured minerals such as cobalt oxide for blue, and copper oxide for green on the surface of the piece of silver or gold to be enamelled. In such a case the layer of colour gives a raised effect. In the champieve technique, the pattern is first engraved on the surface to create space for the enamel layer to be embedded into the depth thus created, giving a feeling of a smooth surface. The object so covered with minerals is heated in a kiln, one colour at a time – that needing more heat first and, that less, later. Enamelling is used either as the principal decorative element on the outer surface of the ornament, or as the secondary decoration on the reverse side which touches the body, e.g. the inner rim of a bangle.

Sari or Saree, An Indian Clothing

Women of southern India usually wear two kinds of attire - the sari, blouse and petticoat, and the ghagra, choli and odhani. The sari is wrapped around the waist, the pleats tucked in front, and the front then covered by the end-piece. (Sivaramamurti, 1968, 118)The tight-fitting bodice is used as an upper garments,completing the ensemble. The bodice is knotted in front, just below the breasts, with two flaps. In a numher of paintings, women have been portrayed wearing saris that are quite colourful, with a variety of patterns.

The tradition of sari weaving in Southern Indian yields a rich variety of saris. The silk ikat saris from Pochampalli,the Kanchipuram silk and zari-brocaded saris of Tamil Nadu, and the Karalkudi(white cotton with zari) of Kerala consititue some of teh best known sari traditions of the South. The silk pallu and border with a cotton body, of the Gadwals and Wanapartis of Andhra Pradesh, are famous for their quality work, Rich, gold-brocaded saris are made for weddings or for offering to temples. Apart from silk brocades, a range of cotton saris from Tamil Nadu have brilliant checks, and contrasting border and pallu. The cotton-woven jamdani and the intricate weave of Venkatagiris are equally renowned for their workmanship. The royal family of Tanjore patronised special cotton and zari-brocaded saris from the Kadalikaruppar area. These saris combine finely woven cotton with motifs worked in jamdani weave in gold thread.
Material (cotton, silk, zari), patterning and designing vary according to region and caste. The type and volume of saris vary both with provenance and the ethnic group residing in that area.
Women wear the sari in different styles. Some ethnic groups first wrap teh sari around the waist, then take it between the legs, and tuck it at the back. The end piece is used for covering the upper part of the body.
