Indian Saree Clothing Fashion Sari In India
The sari has travelled a long road. In classical sculpture and in painting we see its ancestor, a shorter version, a lower garment knotted at the navel and girdled at the waist which was called by many different names, including "antariya" and "vastram". The girdle had small bells attached to it which could signal the seductive approach of a beautiful maiden; as she walked the flow of the drape was revealed "as moonlight on the tulip or dew drops on the morning rose". These words of Amir Khusro were written in a completely different context but are equally and poetically apt here . The intrepid traveller Ibn Batuta describes an unsewn garment secured at one end and used to cover breast and head at the other; though there was also a veil like an odhni which was often decorated. When there was an upper garment it was a breastband tied at the back (uttariya) or a simply stitched blouse.
