While
the affluent societies delight more in the power and mystique of gold,
treasured and worn in its various delicate interpretations, the proud
Rajasthani villager instinctively revels in the buoyancy and supple muscularity
of silver. The Gujarni or Jat stands clad in silver with the same sense of
well-being as the Gadolia Lohar or Bhilni. So much is jewellery an extension of the body here that it is seldom taken
off, though it often adds up to more than ten pounds (five kilogrammes) in
weight.![]()
Rajasthan is an old land that easily goes as far back as the Indus Valley Civilization, and some of the shapes and forms of that time, such as the large necklace, looped earrings, heavy bangles and anklets worn by the famous dancing girl figurine of Mohenjodaro, can still be seen in the tribal jewellery worn today. In addition, styles brought by travellers from afar, or by 'foreigners' have been indigenized and, in some cases, have also acted as catalysts of change.

Mesopotamia.
Animal motifs and designs that abound in Rajasthani
jewellery, were almost certainly introduced by the Scythians. These were,
in turn, influenced by the Persians, who had developed the execution of
stylized animal forms into a fine art, as is evident from the armlet found with the Oxus treasure (5th-4th century B.C.). The Scythians simplified these forms and
delivered the style to various cultures, stretching from China to Europe
Some pieces of jewellery are almost identical in design, while the common note vibrates through many pieces such as the large rectangular pendants worn both in Rajasthan and in Africa.
