Antique Indian Sterling Silver Jewelry Designs

In Traditional Indian Culture Jewelery had great importance. It was used not merely to beautify, but acted as a store of wealth, marked the rituals of life, signified status, conferred respectability and marked the wearer's identity, social background and stage in life. It also had a close association with religion, fortune and health, and illness, and a medium of prayer and congress with the divine.

These aspects of Indian jewelery still survive, but much less universally than before. Traditionally, a prolific amount of Jewellery was worn, almost all women, other than widows, wore ornaments as an intrinsic part of their dress and as a sign of respectability. The sheer weight of jewellery carried by some was considerable. Men generally wore less ornamentation than women, although a magnificent array was sported by many maharajas and prices as well as by men of certain  tribal groups, who used flowers, seeds and other natural materials. Even animals were caparisoned with Jewellery.
